Moldova may be expelled from CIS free trade zone following EU deal

Moldova could face expulsion from the free trade zone of the Commonwealth of Independent States following its signing of an association agreement with the European Union.

Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said on Monday that the group could apply Article 62 on Fundamental Change of Circumstances of the Vienna Convention to suspend or terminate Moldova's membership in the free trade zone, ITAR-TASS reports.

Shuvalov said the Eurasian Economic Union Council will consider potential protective measures in trade relations with Moldova, which signed the EU accord last month.

After that meeting, it will initiate a draft bill prior to the suspension or termination, according to ITAR-TASS.

Georgia has also signed an association agreement with the EU, and Ukraine has signed the economic part of the agreement.
