Lukashenko: It's time to 'normalize' relations with West

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said the nation should

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said on Tuesday that the nation will seek to normalize relations with the U.S. and Western Europe.

He made the announcement during a presentation to name the new head of the Belarus President's Administration, Alexander Kosinets.

In his statement, the president said Belarus is seeking a foreign policy that encompasses multiple vectors. With the implementation of the Eurasian Economic Union, Belarus must look out for its own interests, the president said.

“Yes, there are positive moments both in politics and the economy. Let’s continue working in this direction. However, we must not bow to any pressure. We will not tolerate any pressure from the West or the East."

With regard to the West, the country does not want conflict, as it shares a border with Poland.

"We will strive to normalize relations with the West," Lukashenko said. "If they are willing to cooperate with us on equal terms and let us know it, we will accept this signal."

Lukashenko reaffirmed the country's commitment to its longtime ally and trading partner, Russia.
