EU: Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan share rights to lay Trans-Caspian Pipeline

The European Union (EU) recently reiterated that Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan hold the exclusive rights to lay the Trans-Caspian Pipeline.

The EU delegation also reaffirmed that the pipeline has its full support.

"Regarding the question on the Status of the Caspian Sea, the EU has repeatedly expressed its support to the respective positions of Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan regarding the exclusive right to lay a pipeline in the Caspian Sea between the two littoral countries in line with international agreements and conventions," the delegation said in a statement.

The 186-mile pipeline is considered to be the preferred option to bring Turkmenistan natural gas to Turkey and even farther into other European countries.

Iran and Russia have spoken out against the pipeline, citing ecological concerns that are likely to occur in the construction process.

Azerbaijan has long expressed its willingness to move forward with the project.
