More Ukrainians utilize sharing services to save money

People at the Kyiv central bus station prepare to board a bus Wednesday. More people are using carpooling services to link up with other drivers to save money.

Ukrainian citizens are using sharing services to help stretch personal finances, a KyivPost story reported Thursday.

The practice of economic sharing involves people saving money through carpooling or sharing supplies and clothing. Services such as Blablacar, a global ride-sharing company, give users other options for travel besides maintaining personal vehicles or purchasing a train ticket. The service allows travelers to seek out others nearby who are going where they need to go and facilitates communication to work out carpooling plans.

People are not yet fed up with consumerism, but are starting to switch to sharing services,” Oleksiy Lazorenko, Ukrainian country manager for Blablacar, said. “It’s just cheaper.”

Another example is a food-sharing service based in Germany. The service allows restaurants to share excess food with other restaurants or private citizens instead of throwing it away.

With the current struggles financially in Ukraine, sharing services allow citizens ways to save money.
