U.S. grants carrier permit to Azerbaijan's Silky Way West Airlines

Azerbaijan freight specialist airline Silky Way West Airlines has secured a foreign carrier permit from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S.-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce said Wednesday.

This permit allows the airline to schedule both charter and cargo flights to New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) from Baku, Azerbaijan, CH-Aviation, a Swiss aviation intelligence provider, said.

The airline is the country's main cargo airline, offering flights throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Its fleet consists of five Boeing aircraft, three being Boeing 747-400F planes and two Boeing B767-300F planes. The airline also will collaborate with other airlines in the country, specifically Silky Way Airlines and Azerbaijan Airlines, utilizing storage space on both airlines' planes.

Officials said the inclusion of the Azerbaijan air service will facilitate further cooperation between the U.S. and Azerbaijan,  streamlining cargo shipments by not requiring a transfer to another airline, which lessens the time and expense of shipments between the two countries.
