As Belarus constructs a nuclear power plant, a French expert recently stressed that maintaining nuclear and radiation safety is of paramount importance for the country.
Jacques Lochard, director of the Nuclear Protection Evaluation Center of France, spoke during an international training session at the National Radiology Institute of Gomel on Tuesday.
“Besides fundamental laws and regulations that underpin the nuclear safety today, your country needs to take into consideration the Chernobyl factor,” Lochard said. “Many Belarusian residents were affected by the Chernobyl disaster. I am convinced that the nation’s memory of these events has a huge impact on decisions of the people authorized to build a nuclear power plant... ."
Lochard noted that Belarus’ experience in radiological protection and reclamation of contaminated land is important for all countries promoting nuclear energy.
“An enormous amount of work has been done; a great number of measures have been taken," Lochard said. "At present the situation is totally under control.”
