Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, and Karolos Papoulias, the president of Greece, recently told reporters that relations between the two countries are of strategic importance.
Aliyev spoke on Azerbaijan's recent acceptance of the chairmanship of the Council of Europe, which it will hold until the end of the year. He also pointed to Greece's presidency of the European Union, which allowed for Azerbaijan to make strong connections with the EU at a high level. Additionally, Azerbaijan welcomed a visit from European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, News.az reports.
During the visit, regional security was discussed, particularly with respect to the unresolved Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The United Nations Security Council has adopted four resolutions for the unconditional withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from occupied territories.
Aliyev also spoke on the topic of energy security, particularly in reference to the TAP project, which is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe, according to News.az.
