Russian companies show interest in Belarusian MTS shares

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Alexander Surikov said on Wednesday that Russian companies are looking to buy the state share in SOOO MTS, a Belarusian mobile carrier.

A tender was scheduled for the sale of 51 percent of state-owned share in the company on Jan. 6, BelTA reports.

Residents and non-residents were able to take part in the tender. A lack of applicants, however, resulted in the calling off of the tender.

"The work to sell MTS continues and our companies are taking part in it. The assessed value has dropped. I think it is now $863 million. Our companies seek to buy it," Surikov said, according to BelTA.

OAO MTS, a Russian mobile character, expressed interest in purchasing the share for $450-500 million at a time when the share was on sale for $863 million. The price prior to that was upwards of $1 billion.
