U.S. discusses cooperation with Azerbaijan on energy

The U.S. State Department announced last week that it planned to work closely with Azerbaijan in the field of alternative energy.

Julia Nesheiwat, the department's deputy assistant secretary for implementation in the Bureau of Energy Resources, made the announcement during a trip to Azerbaijan. She visited the Azerbaijan State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy to discuss cooperation in the field of energy and other areas, AzerNews reports.

"The U.S. is pleased with Azerbaijan's achievements in the field of alternative energy," Nesheiwat said, according to AzerNews. "Azerbaijan is known for its oil and gas, but the world must learn about it as a country rich in alternative energy sources. We look forward to close cooperation with Azerbaijan in this sphere."

Azerbaijan currently acquires two percent of its total energy production from alternative resources, like small hydropower plants. The country intends to increase the figure to 20 percent by 2020 by utilizing its wind, sun, geothermal and mixed energy potential, according to AzerNews.
