NASB to partner with Roscosmos on satellite development

The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) is teaming up with the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, to develop a new satellite, NASB Chief of Staff Piotr Vityaz said on Tuesday.

This falls in line with the government's potential plan to revise a program in outer space. According to Vityaz, the satellite's construction is expected to take three years.

First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of NASB, Sergei Chizhik, has stated in previous reports that Belarus has a presence in space with their BKA satellite, which was launched into orbit in 2012 with Russian satellite Canopus-B. The satellite is used to produce images of the earth's surface and the data collected thereby has been utilized by 11 ministries.

“We are now working with Roscosmos on what the satellite will look like," Vityaz said. "It may be a satellite with the resolution of less than one meter.”

This indicates that the proposed satellite would be less powerful than the satellite currently in orbit, as it has a resolution of 2.1 meters at its highest quality.
