Turkey to pursue long-range electric cars

Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Isik

Turkish Science, Industry and Technology Minister Fikri Isik recently announced that the government is ready to begin designing and configuring long-range electric cars.

The minister stated that the ability of Turkey to compete in the internal combustion engine market was fairly low, so the country's leaders made the decision to go in a different direction.

"There's a new, emerging technology: Long-range electric cars," Isik said. "This sector will be living its golden year within the next four to five years. Therefore, we wanted to use this chance and have initiated an extensive study. Now it's time to reap the fruits."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to have an electric car brand developed during his term.

The Turkish American Chamber of Commerce said the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey would handle research and development of the overall sector, while private companies handle engineering and design aspects.
