Latvia looking to expand shipment of oil products to Belarus

Mihalis Popkovs, the ambassador of Latvia to Belarus, said on Wednesday that Latvia is looking to increase transshipment of oil products via the Freeport at Riga.

In December of 2014, a memorandum of cooperation between the two nations was signed during a commission on trade and economic collaboration.

"The session was different from the previous ones, because we managed to make our cooperation more specific. This pertains to the transshipment of liquid products (mainly, oil products) from Belarus via Freeport of Riga,” Popkovs said.

According to a report from the Belarus press service, Latvia is willing and able to provide favorable terms in multiple ways.

The Freeport at Riga is one of Latvia's largest ports and is capable of facilitating the transfer of up to 45 million tons of product and handles metals, coal, fertilizers, oil and chemical products, wood and food.

The Latvian Embassy reports that six percent of cargo handled by the port came from Belarus.
