EBRD president visits Belarus

European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) President Sir Suma Chakrabarti visited Belarus Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss developments in the country's economic and political spheres.
During his visit, Chakrabarti met with President Alexander Lukashenko, Prime Minister Andrey Kobyakov and other high-ranking Belarus officials. He also met with leaders of organizations that specialize in issues relating to civil society and community development.

The bank has been an avid investor in Belarus, providing approximately $1.8 billion to 70 projects within the country's private sector.

In January, it was reported that in 2014 the EBRD had increased aid to many countries as financial and geopolitical tension became more apparent, specifically in Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The EBRD also indicated this investment pattern is likely to continue in 2015.
