Rail line may cross Kazakhstan, extend to Beijing

Andrei Denisov, Russia's ambassador to China, said on Tuesday that a planned high-speed rail line might cross Kazakhstan and extend to Beijing, the Eurasian Development Bank reported.

The railway plan started as a link between Moscow and Kazan, the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, but Denisov said China may increase its investment to make it a Moscow-Beijing line, running through Kazakhstan.

"Another transport scheme could be built that could become part of the route of a new Silk Road," Denisov said.

The original development agreement was signed in October 2014 by the Russian Transport Ministry, Russian Railways, the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission and the China Railway Corporation. Investors in China had indicated that they would invest $6.5 million in the railway, Russian Railways First Vice President Alexander Misharin said.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping said a feasibility study on the current Moscow-Kazan route has shown positive results.
