Belarus favors opening up economic ties with Ukraine

Alexander Radkov

The Republic of Belarus is in favor of resuming productive economic ties and trade with Ukraine, Belarus Presidential Aide Alexander Radkov said on Monday.

Radkov said that Belarus is ready to have good relations with Ukraine and committed to policies that strengthen Belarus-Ukraine relations. Historically the two nations have had close political and economic relations, leaving Belarus citizens concerned with recent events in Ukraine.

“During the visit to Kiev, (Belarus President) Alexander Lukashenko, who is sincerely interested in the improvement of the situation in Ukraine, discussed political, economic and other issues with his Ukrainian counterpart," Radkov said. "It is essential to maintain dialogue at all levels."

Discussion and negotiations focused on bolstering economic ties.

Radkov said that the partnership would likely have positive impacts for both countries. Radkov also said reopening of the Belarusian–Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission for Trade and Economic Cooperation would be crucial to this process.
