Ostrovets-based power plant obtains license in Belarus

An Ostrovets, Belarus-based nuclear power plant obtained a license last week to build its first power-generating unit.

The Belarusian Emergency Ministry decided to provide the license during a meeting of the ministry's board. The ministry agreed to provide the license after Gosatomnadzor, the Belarusian Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department, received the necessary documentation, the Belarusian Telegraph Agency reports.

"The document permits us to start the main stage of the construction of the first power-generating unit," a specialist from Gosatomnadzor, said, according to the Belarusian Telegraph Agency.

Experts with the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus were required by law to evaluate the safety of the power-generating unit. The experts found the safety of the power-generating unit was fully proven by the documentation and the unit met Russian, Belarusian and international recommendations related to nuclear energy.

Belarus poured the concrete into the foundation of the facility in November. The power plant will eventually have two power-generating units with a full generating capacity of up to 2,400 megawatts.

The first unit is scheduled for launch in November 2018, the Belarusian Telegraph Agency reports.
