Bukhara addresses regional development

The regional administration of Bukhara, the capital of the Bukhara province of Uzbekistan, hosted a press conference last week on the development of the region.

Press Secretary Akbar Rustamov told reporters that the state-run Halk Bank has 12 branches in the region, 11 mini-banks, 85 specialty products for utility payments and 51 special ticket windows.

Halk Bank provides commercial banking and savings services as well as retail loan services.

Based in Tashkent, the bank operates as a subsidiary of Turkey's Halk Bankasi, the seventh-largest bank in Turkey in terms of assets.

Bukhara is the nation's fifth-largest city, with a population of 263,400. The city's economy is based on a number of food and light industrial enterprises, including a large works processing Karakul lambs' fleece.

The city's importance has also grown because it is the largest city in a natural gas region. Tourism also contributes to the local economy.
