ABD gives Kyrgyzstan $22 million to improve education

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) agreed on Tuesday to provide $22 million in grants to support improvements in Kyrgyzstan's educational system in order to increase the drive for a better standard of living in the country.

The improvement program will include an overhaul of the curricula, which will involve guideline revisions for textbook development and publishing, and allowing textbook rentals for vulnerable students.

The program will also include incentives in the form of salary increases for teachers linked to professional standards and the introduction of a teacher development program.

Plans also call for developing schools specifically for the sciences, mathematics and technology.

Adapting the education system to an evolving world economy is a priority for the government.

"ADB has been supporting the Kyrgyz Republic in improving its education system for many years, and plans to continue doing so,” ADB Country Director Rie Hiraoka said. "Much has been done in recent years, but more efforts and reform actions are needed to improve students' learning outcomes.”
