EBRD to finance Tajikistan's sanitation upgrades

EBRD President Sir Suma Chakrabarti visits Norak in November during a high-level visit to Tajikistan.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved loans totaling $4 million to support better waste management in Tajikistan, the bank said Monday.

This financing deal will allow the city of Norak to build a modernized landfill for the municipality's solid waste, and it will allow for enhancements in the collection process. The bank said the city is in dire need of these sanitation improvements, with few collection points and current dumpsites becoming increasingly unsanitary.

Half of this financing will go to the EBRD's Shareholder Special Fund and to the Khojagli Manziliyu Kommunali, a city-owned enterprise. The two entities will work together in planning and implementing the enhanced systems and landfill.

“The EBRD is committed to helping the country alleviate the problem of bad sanitation, which is especially acute in smaller cities like Norak," Richard Jones, head of the EBRD's Tajikistan Office, said. "Our work in Norak is part of our commitment to modernize municipal services in Tajikistan, and in addition to extensive operations in water and wastewater; we have now financed four solid-waste projects."
