The World Bank released a report Monday that looks into the interconnections between education, the labor market and worker skills, and how these are likely to affect the Republic of Kyrgyzstan.
Skills are highly valued in the labor market, but the report finds gaps in the pool of laborers and weaknesses in the country's education system and labor practices that are affecting skill levels.
The report said preschool is only accessible to a quarter of Kyrgyz children ages 3 to 5 years old. This raises concerns over limited early access to education in developing cognitive skills. Only half of those in the labor market have the cognitive and technical skills necessary for high-quality employment -- and many of those lacking skills had reached higher levels of education.
The report said public policy that establishes access to early childhood education and nutrition services, and that facilitates education at all levels would be beneficial to close skill gaps.
