Belarus Foreign Minister Nikolai Demchuk named Turkmenistan as Belarus' primary economic partner within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) during Wednesday's celebration of the 19th anniversary of the U.N. General Assembly's Resolution for permanent neutrality in Turkmenistan.
The two nations have shared good relations through regular visits and forums involving dignitaries at the highest levels of both governments and have facilitated continued cooperative efforts.
Despite various joint ventures, the two countries are pursuing deeper levels of collaboration, rather than just having good trade relations, citing the Garlyk mining facility in Turkmenistan and other projects.
The neutrality resolution was an important step that led to the strong relations between Belarus and Turkmenistan — it allowed the latter to create positive international relations in many regions and with many countries. This was a move that was supported by Belarus, and it voted in favor of the resolution back in 1995 at the U.N. General Assembly.
