ADB to loan Kyrgyzstan power plant $110 million

The Asian Development Bank on Tuesday agreed to extend $110 million to renovate and modernize Toktogul, the Republic of Kyrgyzstan's largest power plant.

The plant's technology is outdated by at least 30 years. System failures and losses are a danger to the country. A complete failure on its part would be catastrophic, according to the bank's Principal Energy Specialist Jim Liston. He stressed the need for upgrades to keep the country and the region stable.

Two of the four generator units will be replaced as a result of this funding. The new units will increase the power output and allow more of the energy produced to be utilized. Currently 80 percent of power generated is used. With new units 95 percent will be utilized.

This upgrade plan is in line with plans to improve the power sector, specifically preparations for 20-year demand projections. Domestic power supplies will be increased with the help of the bank's funding.
