WCO leader praises Armenia's tax, customs reforms during visit

During a visit to Armenia by World Customs Organization Secretary General Kunio Mikuriya, Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan took the opportunity to discuss continued customs relations, the Republic of Armenia said Thursday.

Abrahamyan said that overall, he was pleased with the success of cooperation efforts so far. In his meeting with Mikuriya, he said customs reforms that were implemented yielded positive results.

Armenia improved its status on the World Bank's Doing Business 2014 report. The nation jumped up four places, from 49th to 45th.

The secretary general agreed that Armenia had made significant progress since his first visit back in 2009. The government's tax and customs management and the implementation of modernized equipment and protocols drew Mikuriya's praise.

Both officials agreed that an improved business climate should be the result of future customs provisions, along with better economic conditions.

With much left to improve, Abrahamyan urged continued collaboration between Armenia and the World Customs Organization.
