Ukraine receives loans to update heating infrastruture

District heating systems in Ukraine will receive a much needed update with financial support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) and the Clean Technology Fund (CTF,) the EBRD said Friday.

The current heating systems account for 20 percent of carbon dioxide emissions and consume up to 44 percent of the country's energy. Support comes in the form of a 7 million euro loan from the bank and a 3 million euro loan from the CTF that will fund Lutskteplo. In addition, 4 million euros will come from E5P, largely from the European Union.

The loans, totaling 14 million euros, will install 210 heating substations and a bio-fuel boiler. Inefficient basement boilers will be replaced with more efficient gas boilers. The planned renovations also include insulated pipes and a management system that is computerized.

EBRD has invested 9.8 billion euros across 337 projects in Ukraine.
