Azerbaijan to develop ICT, High Technology Park

During the opening ceremony for a new HP office building in the Baku region, Azerbaijan's Communication and High Technology Minister, Ali Abbasov announced plans to develop information and communication technology (ICT) in the country on Tuesday.

"The state budget for the purchase of IT-hardware and software will be increased," Abbasov said.

Aimed at connecting the center and rural areas of the country, Abbasov called it a "digital divide." Plans include developing broadband infrastructure and satellite systems.

The plans call for the construction of a 50 hectare High Technology Park in the Pirallahi district in Baku. The park will include the resources necessary for logistics, governing bodies and telecommunication space. Residents and companies within the planned park will be exempt from taxes and custom duties for seven years.

Developing this sector will add sustainability to the economic development of Azerbaijan, according to the U.S.- Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce.
