Uzbekistan president, World Tourism Organization chief meet

Islam Karimov, the president of the Republic of Uzbekistan, met with Taleb Rifai, the secretary general of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in Samarkind on Friday to discuss advancing tourism in the country. 

The pair discussed international, ecological, natural, cultural, medical and other types of tourism that are prevalent in Uzbekistan, as well as the restoration of historical monuments, training of specialists and promotion of the Great Silk Road brand.

Rifai was in the country to take part in the 99th session of the UNWTO Executive Council.

Uzbekistan has been a part of the UNWTO since 1993 and the UNWTO Regional Center for the Silk Route has operated in the Samarkind since 2004, with more than 150 member nations in the organization.

Tourism makes up nine percent of the gross global product and 29 percent of global export of services. There are more than 200 million people around the world who work in the tourism industry.
