Heads of state, government officials and business executives gathered at the Sangachal terminal on Sept. 20 for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Southern Gas Corridor.
During the ceremony the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and other participants put their handprints into special frames to be displayed at the site.
The first pipeline shows images of the flags of the countries that the gas corridor will pass through and the logos of BP and SOCAR.
Aliyev, government officials and representatives from BP and SOCAR signed the pipe before the foundation was laid.
Aliyev said the project will redraw Europe’s energy map.
“This project is very important for Azerbaijan and will allow exporting our gas resources to the world markets," Aliyev said. "This project opens up new opportunities for transit countries. This is a project of the new century. The participants of the project will benefit from the pipeline at least 100 years.”
