Turkey recently posted an increase of 466 megawatts (MW) in its wind energy capacity during the first six months of 2014, according to the Turkish Wind Energy Association.

Its total capacity in wind energy hit 3,424 MW in the first half of the year, Mustafa Serdar Ataseven, the chairman of the association, said, Anadolu Agency reports.

Ataseven said the target for the end of the year was to add 900-1,000 MW to the total wind capacity, bringing the total to 4,000 MW, according to Anadolu.

Eighty-seven such plants are now operational in Turkey, with more than 39 under construction.

Thirty-eight percent of the installed wind energy capacity is in western Turkey, while 36 percent is in the northwestern Marmara region, where Istanbul--the largest city in the country--is located. Fifteen percent of its wind capacity is in the south, Anadolu reports.

Turkey seeks to derive 30 percent of its total energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydro power.
